Located just 30 kilometers south-east of Kampot, Kep province offers travelers a glimpse into the holiday location of past Cambodian and French elites; a modern-day interesting juxtaposition of luxurious villas and rustic jungle bungalows. The small province, marked by its “White Lady Statue” and welcoming crab monument, is frequented by tourists for its quaint white beaches and infamous seafood – specifically, the fresh, succulent meats sold at the Kep crab market.
Although quite smaller than the beaches in Sihanoukville, Kep Beach offers a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to relax and enjoy the daily views of fishermen gathering boatloads of crab to be sold and prepared at the Kep market and surrounding beach-front restaurants. Spanning over 5,000 hectares, Kep National Park offers a vast jungle for exploring. With just a cheap $1 entrance fee, the park consists of a variety of treks – some for more experienced hikers, and others for the leisure walkers. Make sure to check out your options and get a bite to eat first at the Led Zep Café, a delicious bohemian café in the forest staffed by locals who are happy to help guide you through the jungle paths. The Kep Butterfly Farm, a serene location to get in touch with your inner peace and nature, can be reached by a short hike away from the central hub cafe.
For the adventurers, Koh Tonsay, otherwise known as “Rabbit Island” is a great day trip option, and can be reached by a short but oftentimes choppy boat ride from the coast of Kep. It is an under developed, less touristy location, perfect for anyone searching for a place to drink a coconut, hang in a hammock, and watch a beautiful Cambodian sunset.
