Welcome to the hectic capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. Developing at a spanking pace, this city’s skyline is constantly changing as new skyscrapers see the light of day. Gone are the days when Phnom Penh was still a small provincial city: the capital has now embraced modernity, contrasting with the rest of this rather rural country. However, Phnom Penh is also packed with surprises: go and enjoy its busy nightlife or take a stroll on the riverside to finish at the sumptuous Royal Palace. Craving for a shopping session? Visit the famous colonial-style Central Market or the smaller Russian Market: Cambodia’s capital will never cease to amaze you.
Phnom Penh is brimming with things to do and there is something to suit all tastes. Want to discover the cultural part of the city? Go and visit the Royal Palace, the National Museum or even the Silver Pagoda. Interested in sightseeing? Grab a tuk-tuk and visit the Wat Phnom and some of the numerous pagodas of the capital. Phnom Penh is also overflowing with bars, cafes and restaurants: grab your dinner at the night market, go for a drink in the cosy Bassac Lane and keep the night going in the famous street 278. As Phnom Penh is a rather big city you may need to use tuk-tuks and motodops (moto-taxis, usually cheaper than other means of transport). Do not mind bargaining your journeys as some may try to overprice their services.
However, because of its past a visit of Phnom Penh would not be complete without visiting the following places. To better understand what happened during the Khmer Rouge regime we recommend visiting the infamous Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, as known as the Killing Fields. Those are not for the most sensitive people but will definitely help you comprehend Cambodia’s tumultuous past.
