Heading down south to the coast is the perfect way to relax and rewind after temple-hopping and city-exploring in Cambodia. Kampong Som, known to tourists as “Sihanoukville,” is a province located in the southwest of the country, on the tip of the peninsula at the Gulf of Thailand. Its white beaches, secluded nearby islands, and assortment of eating, drinking, and accommodation options ranging from budget hostel hangouts to luxury getaways makes the destination in Cambodia a must-see.
Sihanoukville has a little bit of everything – for carefree backpackers looking to meet fellow travelers, Serendipity beach is a hotspot, known for its relaxing days on the beach and lively nights partying at the many beach bars lining the coast. Enjoy a sunset view with a $.50 draft beer while listening to live music at the Zephyr bar, or catch the right night for a fire dancing show at one of the infamous full moon parties. If you’re looking to escape the tourist bubble a bit, Otres Beaches 1 & 2 are spots with a more relaxed atmosphere. Exploring the province of Sihanoukville is not just beaches and parties—travelers can also experience the culture and unique architectural style of Cambodian ancient pagodas, including Wat Krom Temple, which is located just a few kilometers out of the city. Lush jungle treks and boat adventures through the fantastic mangroves of Kampong Som are accessible in Ream National Park, about 15 kilometers to the east of the province.
Nowadays, Sihanoukville is visited by so many tourists as a way to escape the busy provinces and find peace and solitude on the many surrounding islands of Cambodia. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem are two of the most frequented islands, and can be reached by a short speed boat or ferry ride from the coast of Sihanoukville. Being the more developed of the two popular destination spots, Koh Rong offers a wide variety of budget hostel and food options as well as jungle treks to the infamous “Long Beach,” a secluded white beach paradise. Koh Rong Samloem is a bit more of a rustic island option. It is less developed and electricity does not run all day, but the thinly tourist area offers an unspoiled tropical escape.
