Kampong Cham province is located just a short two hour bus ride up Highway No.6 from the capital city of Phnom Penh. It is an ideal location for the traveler who would like to explore Cambodia a bit off the beaten path of tourists. Although it is not one of the main provinces to visit in Cambodia, it nonetheless deserves a visit, with its natural sights and unique look into the culture of everyday Cambodian life.
There are many ways to reach the province: more traditionally, taking a bus to Kampong Cham is the most straightforward option, with many bus companies such as Giant Ibis and Mekong Express leaving periodically throughout the day. It can also be traveled to via bullet boat, motorcycle, or shared taxi. There are many nice lodging options within the city of Kampong Cham, such as Reasmey Cheanich Hotel and the Monorom 2 VIP Hotel.
The infamous Kampong Cham bamboo bridge is not for the faint of heart; nearly a kilometer in length and constructed entirely of bamboo poles, it is the longest bamboo bridge in the world, and is reconstructed every year once the rainy season ends. Pass over the rickety bridge either by foot, motorcycle, or bicycle, to reach the scenic island of Koh Pen on the other side. There are a few options for accommodation or a bite to eat on the secluded island, such as the Mekong Bamboo Hut Guesthouse.
If you’re in the mood for more temple exploring, Wat Nokor is a must-see. It is comprised of surrounding Angkorian temple walls with a more modern pagoda existing within the center. History-buffs can experience past remains of the colonization period in Cambodia at the French Watchtower, which was built in the 1900s to guard the river and rubber plantations against pirates and bandits. Climb the very steep staircase all the way to the top to enjoy the view.
